Meet the Family From the Firehouse

If you willingly ran into burning buildings to save others, you’d want to do it with a team who would keep an eye out for you, right? Of course you would. The guys of Engine 229/Ladder 146 in Brooklyn feel the same way. “We’ve got to trust each other with our lives. I can trust every single person here with my life on any job — small, big, I know they’re going to be there,” one of them told us. They’ve become a family in many ways, whether it’s through admiration, respect, or sharing one of the many meals they all cook together (a good meal and a good talk keeps people together, they say). In good humor, they tell us that like any family, theirs has members you don’t always like, but you still love them. Either way, they’ve always got one another’s backs.
